Art Installation: steel, plastic sheet, tape, compost, plants

Crato/Portugal, 2024

Terrariums containing plants and mushrooms are wrapped in a waterproof plastic tarp, ensuring their protection. Opening these terrariums would halt the condensation process, compromising their water autonomy.

These terrariums take the form of roller coasters that traverse the land around the lake. By plunging into and emerging from the earth, they symbolize the extraction of plants from their natural habitat and their reappearance on the other side of the globe.

The roller coaster, used as a metaphor for thrills, prompts reflection on the fate of plants and mushrooms, crucial to our ecosystems ("plants are the lungs of the earth, mushrooms its veins"). This reflection underscores the possibility that these organisms may undergo intense variations due to human activity. The fleeting pleasure of thrills, enjoyed by humans, thus finds its parallel in the potentially destabilizing impact on our ecosystems.

The roller coaster, exclusively reserved for plants and mushrooms, highlights the contrast between our human experiences of pleasure and the potential experiences of nature in response to our activities. This emphasizes the need to find a balance between our pursuit of thrills and the protection of ecosystems, underscoring our responsibility towards biodiversity preservation.
